The Grey Cities

The Grey Cities are a small group of villages north east of The Dark Woods, inhabited mostly by goblins. Because of their remote location these villages are rarely seen or visited by people from the far sides of The Dark Woods. Such visits are made even more infrequent by the fact that The Dark Woods have long, now, been controlled by tribes of Ettins and Worgs, both of whom tend to hunt uninvited visitors for food or for sport.

What records and tales exist from those few who have visited the Grey Cities describe them as a broken remnant of the old Goblin Nation, living in the shadow of its former self. The culture of the villages is dominated by a culture of hero-worship of the long absent Birik Kael’alk, whom they refer to as the “Eternal Queen”, and for whose return they eagerly await. Little more, unfortunately, is known of these people and their culture as they treat most non-goblins as threats and their eager anticipation of the Eternal Queen’s return keeps them from wandering too far from the edges of The Dark Woods.

Those few records of visits to their villages describe sophisticated hill-side living arrangements that utilize clever counter-balancing contraptions to allow inhabitants to ascend and descend quickly and easily. However, they also describe a culture deprived of resources by their isolation. From the descriptions the Grey Cities have little in the way of workable metals, and rely heavily on hunting and gathering for food. Popular estimations put the population of the Grey Cities at less than 5,000.
